Indications
- Lacerations, abscesses to medial leg
Contraindications
- Infection overlying injection site
- Allergy to local anesthetic
Equipment
- 5-10cc of local anesthetic of choice
- 22G needle
- Cleansing solution
- Ultrasound with high-frequency linear transducer
- Ultrasound transducer sterile cover
Preparation
Position
Position the patient supine, elevate and externally rotate the target extremity to expose the medial aspect
Ultrasound
Landmarks
- Place the transducer in transverse plane along the medial aspect of the lower extremity approximately 10cm proximal to the knee (medial femoral condyle)
- The saphenous nerve is located deep to the sartorius muscle
Technique
- Introduce needle from anterior aspect
- In-plane needle visualization
- Infiltrate local anesthetic around identified saphenous nerve
