Indications
- Lacerations or abscesses involving lateral lower leg
Contraindications
- Infection overlying injection site
- Allergy to local anesthetic

- 5cc of local anesthetic of choice
- 22-25G needle
- Cleansing solution
- Ultrasound with high-frequency linear transducer
- Ultrasound transducer sterile cover
Preparation
Position
Position the patient supine
Ultrasound
Landmark
- Place the transducer in a transverse orientation inferior to the fibular head on the lateral aspect of the proximal lower leg
- Identify the common peroneal nerve just superficial to the fibular cortex
Technique
- Introduce needle from medial aspect
- In-plane needle visualization
- Infiltrate local anesthetic superficial to the common peroneal nerve (*)
